When families call us to help in the recruitment of a nanny we always ask them to describe the type of nanny they would like. Unsurprisingly, the person they nearly always ask for is Mary Poppins. I imagine most families in one way or another will have had Mary Poppins visit their home either by the movie or the book written by P.L. Travers so she would automatically be the point of reference and natural choice for their childcare. But what about the other nannies that we know of and have enjoyed – why do they never get asked for ? The most recent addition would be Nanny McPhee but as she is not as sugar coated as Mary Poppins I guess this brings a slight concern but never the less, the result is still the same – the children are well looked after and everything works out well in the end when the true magic of Nanny McPhee’s beauty is revealed so why is she never requested?

What about Maria from the Sound of Music as she too was a Nanny and as she  was played by Julie Andrews I would have thought she was the next best bet if Mary Poppins wasn’t available but again, Maria is never asked for. So what is it that keeps Mary Poppins in the top spot and the Go To person for families looking for a nanny .. I think the main reason is the feel good factor – after all the all singing and dancing nanny who makes the medicine go down is what every household needs and as she holds such a special place in so many hearts and minds I don’t believe there will ever be a nanny to beat her.

Why Mary Poppins is still world class
