Why a Trial Day Can Make All the Difference When Hiring Home Staff
Why a Trial Day Can Make All the Difference When Hiring Home Staff
Inviting someone into your home to care for your children, support your household, or help keep family life running smoothly is never a small decision.
After all, whether you are hiring a housekeeper, nanny, or nanny-housekeeper, you're not simply filling a role - you are welcoming someone into the rhythm of your home. And that deserves care, thought and, ideally, a little expert support.
At Hummingbird Home Staff, we believe that the right home staff can be life-changing. A wonderful housekeeper can bring order, calm and consistency to a busy household (and possibly save everyone from the mystery of the disappearing school shoe), whereas the right nanny can become a trusted partner in family life, supporting your children's development while giving parents invaluable peace of mind.
But finding that right fit? That takes more than a polished CV and a promising interview - which is exactly where a trial day comes in…
Why Hiring the Right Housekeeper or Nanny Matters
Before we talk about trial day coordination, it's worth pausing on why getting the right match matters so much.
A skilled housekeeper can transform the day-to-day running of a home. From managing laundry and household organisation to meal preparation and creating a well-run environment, they often become the quiet engine behind a smoothly functioning household.
A nanny, meanwhile, brings so much more than childcare. The right nanny supports routines, nurtures emotional development, encourages learning and becomes a trusted presence in your child's life. And in blended roles, such as nanny-housekeepers, you often get the best of both worlds.
However, there's no denying that chemistry matters. Yes, you can assess experience on paper, you can ask excellent interview questions, and you can check references thoroughly. But how someone works in your home, interacts with your children, responds to your routines, or fits your household dynamic? That is often best understood through a trial.
Why a Trial Day is So Valuable
At Hummingbird Home Staff, we believe a trial is an essential part of the placement process, allowing both family and candidate to ensure the right fit in a natural home environment.
A trial day allows both family and candidate to move beyond theory and see how things work in practice. For families, it provides an opportunity to assess:
- How the candidate interacts naturally within your home
- Their approach to childcare or household tasks
- Their initiative, communication style and professionalism
- Whether personalities and expectations align
- Most importantly… whether it simply feels right
And for candidates, it is equally valuable. A trial gives them the opportunity to understand your household, experience the role first-hand, and decide whether the position feels like the right long-term fit for them too.
Introducing Hummingbird's Trial Day Coordination Service
While trial days are incredibly valuable, organising them can quickly become more complex than many families anticipate. Coordinating schedules, confirming expectations, briefing the candidate, managing communication, and handling feedback… It can feel like a job in itself.
That is exactly why we offer our dedicated Trial Day Coordination Service.
Designed to make the process seamless, professional and stress-free, we manage every aspect of the trial so you can focus on what matters most - assessing the candidate and ensuring you find the right fit for your home. Here's how it works and what we do:
Coordinating Availability
We liaise with both client and candidate to arrange a suitable date and timing that works for everyone. Simple in theory, however, surprisingly not always simple in practice. We handle the logistics so you do not have to.
Confirming Duties and Expectations
Clear expectations create successful trials. We help establish duties, timings, household routines and priorities in advance so everyone understands how the day will run. No awkward guesswork, just clarity from the start.
Preparing the Candidate
This is a crucial part of the process. We ensure the candidate arrives fully briefed and properly prepared, understanding the household setup, responsibilities and expectations before they walk through your door. That means a smoother, more productive trial day for everyone.
Managing Communication
From pre-trial arrangements to post-trial follow-up, we manage communication throughout. We act as a professional point of contact, ensuring nothing gets lost, missed or misunderstood. Because even excellent candidates can feel nervous on a trial day. (And if we are honest, so can families.)
Gathering Feedback
After the trial, we collect feedback from both parties to help support decision-making. Often, these conversations surface valuable insights that help clarify whether moving forward feels right. Sometimes the answer is a confident yes, whereas sometimes a trial reveals that the fit is not quite there.
And honestly? That is still a successful outcome. After all, it's better to know now rather than six weeks into a permanent placement.
Trial Day Fees
To provide a seamless and professional experience, we manage the organisation and payment of all trial days on your behalf. All trial fees are payable in advance to secure the booking and are inclusive of VAT.
Trial fees are based on standard candidate hourly rates. In some cases, where candidates have higher salary expectations or where trial hours differ, adjusted pricing may apply - this will always be discussed and agreed with you in advance:
3 Hour Trial - £105
5 Hour Trial - £150
8 Hour Trial - £230
These fees include:
- Full organisation and coordination of the trial
- Direct payment to the candidate at their agreed hourly rate
- A fully managed, hassle-free process with no need for cash handling on the day
By managing trial bookings centrally, we ensure:
- Clarity and transparency for both parties
- Prompt and secure payment to the candidate
- A professional experience that reflects the standards of your home
Cancellations & Changes
We understand that plans can occasionally change. However, as trial days involve reserving a candidate's time and coordinating schedules, the following terms apply:
- Cancellations with more than 48 hours' notice will receive a refund minus a £25 + VAT administration fee
- Cancellations within 24–48 hours will incur a 50% charge
- Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice, or on the day, are non-refundable
One reschedule may be accommodated with a minimum of 48 hours' notice, subject to availability.
In the unlikely event that a candidate cancels, we will endeavour to provide a suitable replacement or offer a full refund.
If Hummingbird Home Staff is required to cancel a trial, a full refund will be issued, or the trial will be rearranged at a mutually convenient time.
How the Process Works
Working with Hummingbird, the process is simple:
